This classroom is a developmentally appropriate, language-rich learning environment where listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities prevail. Activities are planned to encourage the growth and development of the whole child – socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically. The individual child learns at his/her own pace and is encouraged to be responsible, independent, curious, caring, and creative. He/She is given frequent opportunities to make decisions/choices about his/her own learning. The student is expected to understand, appreciate, respect, and work cooperatively with peers in the classroom. Self-esteem, confidence and resourcefulness are continuously reinforced. A community of learners is emerging!

What you will observe as you visit the classroom:

If you look around, you will see all the materials for practical life, sensorial, math, language, science, art, botany, history and music all are at the child’s level and thus accessible to all. In the classroom the children are taught the correct way to use all of the tools and materials available. They are then expected to use the tools appropriately by themselves. You will notice that everything has a place and everything is in its place when not in use.

You will probably notice that there are no individual desks that you might see in a more traditional classroom. Activity centers are featured around the periphery of the classroom where the children make choices for their own learning at different times during the day.

Once the children arrive you will definitely notice the calming  activity and their soft voices, of learning. If you really take the time to observe what each child is doing, you will see that she/he has a sense of purpose. She/he knows what the task is and is working diligently at it. Order is maintained because a goodly amount of time has been dedicated to the establishment of routines. Once those routines have been mastered, a certain level of competency and self-confidence is evidenced.

This is a child-centered, child-friendly classroom environment, which stimulates and gently coach’s children to learn without the fear of failure.

The Needham Montessori School begins with a deep respect for children as unique individuals. Young children have an innate desire to learn. The Montessori environment provides the child with a environment that allows for freedom within limits and offers developmentally appropriate activities to aid the child in his/her development. The development of their social, emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual selves is our focus. The focus is on the process of learning, rather than on the product.

We believe in individualizing each child’s school experience for the fullest development of his/her potential. Skills are presented which teach children how to learn and which encourage them to be self-motivated and competent learners.

Our teachers provide the opportunity for children to function in a safe and positive environment. To help the child to become a passionate learner where he/she embraces and gains a sincere love for learning.
